Biography

Dr. Mecit Can Emre Simsekler is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering at Khalifa University of Science & Technology, Abu Dhabi; and an Honorary Research Associate at the University College London (UCL) School of Management, London. In addition, he is a Visiting Scholar at Boston Children’s Hospital (Teaching Hospital of Harvard Medical School), and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Simsekler obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 2015. During his PhD, he was a visiting researcher in the Center for Medical Innovation System at the University of Tokyo in Summer 2012, and in the Center for Patient Safety and Quality Research at Boston Children’s Hospital in Summer 2014. After completing his PhD, he worked as a Research Associate at the UCL School of Management between 2015 and 2016.

Research Summary

Dr. Simsekler’s research focuses on healthcare operations and system design for patient safety, quality and efficiency. Leveraging principles from operations management and systems thinking, he explores proactive approaches for managing operational failures and safety risks to drive transformational system innovation and improvement. He has served as investigator or co-investigator on several research grants (total value over $1.6M) to improve healthcare operations and supply chain through various tools and methods, such as lean, blockchain and machine learning.

He is the founder and director of the Healthcare Analytics and Management Initiative (HAMI), which is a platform exploring innovative approaches to enhance the value of healthcare delivery. Dr. Simsekler is also a member of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS), Manufacturing and Service Operations Management (MSOM), Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) and European Operations Management Association (EUROMA).

Teaching Summary

Dr. Simsekler has taught courses on operations management and industrial and systems engineering. In line with his research activities, he has developed and taught the Healthcare Analytics & Management and Healthcare Operations Management courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, respectively.
