Research Summary

His research has been in immunology, cell biology, and developmental neurobiology. He retired from active science in 2002.

He was president of the British Society of Cell Biology from 1991 to 1995 and chairman of the UK Life Sciences Committee from 1998-2001. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, of the Academy of Medical Sciences, and of Academia Europaea. He is a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization, a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences, and a Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

He is one of the original co-authors of two widely used textbooks—Molecular Biology of the Cell and Essential Cell Biology.
