Research Summary
My research interests, experience and expertise focus on analysis of education systems in low and middle income countries, including school quality and effectiveness and educational access and equity. My research includes a focus on skills metrics and on longitudinal studies (including learning trajectories), primarily employing large scale survey data in quantitative analyses, but also including mixed methods and qualitative approaches. I am currently engaged in three major funded research projects (i) ESRC-funded Critical Thinking in Higher Education in Africa, (ii) DFID-funded Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE) and (iii) as the Lead Education Researcher for the Young Lives international comparative study at the University of Oxford.

Teaching Summary

I am Programme Leader for the MA Education Planning, Economics and International Development. My MA teaching focuses on the Modules within that programme, particularly Planning for Education and Development and Economic Perspectives on Education Policy. I have supervised a number of doctoral students (PhD and EdD) whose research topics include investments in early childhood development in Peru, the role of language of instruction in shaping learning outcomes in Ethiopia, 'learner-centred' education and teacher beliefs in India, evaluation of early childhood interventions and I am able to consider applications for doctoral study in my areas of research interest, particularly those applying quantitative or mixed-methods designs.
