Research Themes
Research Summary
Prof Fruttiger's research is focused on vascular development and physiology of the retina, as well as associated diseases, such as Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinopathy of Prematurity, Macular Telangiectasia and Age-related Macular Degeneration. In his laboratory, basic science studies in model systems are complemented by histopathological studies on human post-mortem tissue to learn how model-based insights can be related to clinical findings and translated to therapies. In collaboration with clinicians at Moorfields Eye Hospital his team also use patient phenotyping, genetic information and bio samples to learn more about genetic and molecular mechanisms that drive pathologies in the retina.
Teaching Summary
Prof Fruttiger is passionate about teaching and has for many years been actively involved in delivering UCL postgraduate taught courses, using modern teaching methods such as blended learning, flipped teaching and eLearning. He is the programme director of the UCL Bioscience Entrepreneurship MSc and is also Deputy Director of Education at the Institute of Ophthalmology.
