Research Summary
How do we perceive the visual world and guide our actions optimally? What happens when normal control mechanisms breakdown in neurological patients, such as those with visual neglect, Parkinson's disease or alien limb syndrome? Our interests lie in understanding brain mechanisms involved in capturing the most useful data about the external world and how such information is used to control behaviour. We study visual attention, working memory and the visual control of action in healthy people and patients with focal brain lesions or Parkinson's disease. We measure behaviour by monitoring eye or limb movements. We study the extent of brain damage using structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the relatively new technique of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), which probes the integrity of white matter pathways connecting functionally important cortical locations defined by functional MRI (fMRI). We attempt to improve attention and behvaiour using noradrenergic and dopaminergic neuromodulators.
