Dr Mingxing Hu
  • Senior Research Fellow
  • Dept of Med Phys & Biomedical Eng
  • Faculty of Engineering Science

Dr. Mingxing HU is Director of Medical Technology (UCL/China), Faculty of Engineering Sciences, University College London. He was China Director of IXICO plc, a leading brain health company, and the Investment Director of Nord Engine Capital, a FCA authorised Private Equity company.

Mingxing has 20 years’ experience in healthcare and life sciences sectors with various companies, research organizations in both UK and China. He has broad experience across medical imaging, pharmaceutical, medical devices and healthcare services as well as developing business into international markets. He has been leading or participating as the key member of a number of projects supported by Royal Society, National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Medical Research Council (MRC), TSB, EU’s FP7, and as well as the ones sponsored by major industrial partners. He has published ~100 papers in high-quality journals or conferences and holds 5 patents in the areas of medical imaging.

Mingxing is an advisor to both Chinese and UK government and has led or been involved in a number of events/activities of UK-China collaboration, especially in the area of healthcare. He is the member of IEEE, IET & MICCAI and the reviewer of several international journals, e.g. IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, Image and Vision Computing, Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision and Pattern Recognition (Elsevier). He undertook business training at London Business School as part of the CSEL MBA programme.

Research Summary

Dr. Mingxing Hu’s research interests concentrate on both fundamental medical imaging research and translation of innovative technologies into clinical practice, e.g. image guided interventions, or into advanced imaging biomarkers for clinical trial or drug discovery.

For image guided intervention, Dr. Hus’ research work focused on addressing some of these challenges of Minimally invasive surgery with the computer vision technologies, including 3D/4D reconstruction and registration, feature analysis, information fusion, stereo reconstruction and dynamic mosaic. His team developed a new 3D reconstruction technique for internal organ surface, which can provide a wider field-of-view with 3D information for surgeons, including recovering of the missing data. By using this new technique, the reconstructed surface can cover a large area of the organ and this helps to solve the fundamental problem of minimal invasive surgery, that is, the narrow field-of-view. A novel organ motion analysis technique was also developed using moving cameras only, which can convert the complicated 4D (3D+T), the almost impossible, dynamic reconstruction and registration problem back to 3D problem. These techniques can be applied to a range of applications of minimally invasive diagnosis and surgery, such as coronary artery bypass surgery, liver surgery, colonoscopy/colonography, prostate surgery etc.

For imaging biomarker, Dr. Hus’ work focused on how to implement advanced biomarkers in clinical trial/study in the area of neurodegenerative diseases, dementia particularly. The projects included both Industry-Sponsored and Investigator-Initiated trials.
