Before her role at UCL IOE, Mary led the BA Education Studies at the University of Roehampton. Prior to joining academia, she was a Senior Research Officer in the department of Research and Statistics for AQA conducting national studies relating to school-based examinations, testing regimes in schools and the impact of testing on children alongside the key role in awarding national examinations. Mary has also worked in the development of educational programmes with campaigning non-governmental organisations and children's charities and as a facilitator and producer of theatre with young people. Mary is a member of the Research Advisory Group for Qualification Wales, she sits on the Pearson PTE Academic Technical Advisory Group on AI technology and testing; and on AQA's Research Advisory Group. Mary also sits on the Publications Board for the Association of Assessment and Evaluation (Europe) and on the Council for the Philosophy of Education Society for Great Britain (website editor and social media manager).

Research Summary

My key areas of research interest are in educational assessment with particular emphasis upon how philosophy of education and philosophical discourses can help us to improve assessment practice in all its forms. At present, I am researching and writing about the way that assessment is discussed in public settings (particularly online) and how these discourses are eroding trust in education and confidence in assessment. I am also interested in how new technologies are impacting the ways that use assessment, specifically their influence on HE settings and I have recently begun work examining the use of Online Marking for HE assessments with a view to developing systematic trials of marking comparability between paper and screen.

Teaching Summary

I lead the MA in Educational Assessment at UCL IOE and supervise doctoral candidates for both PhD and EdD studies. I have more than 15 years experience teaching in Higher Education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We are always interested to hear from prospective students who wish to learn more about assessment, to develop skills or new ideas and for those who may be interested in creating a research project that might be suitable for doctoral study. 

Current PhD candidates are researching a range of topics including: Chilean National Tests, Tweeting about assessment, Comparative Judgement and Assessments for language learning.
