I have worked on a wide range of issues in theoretical phonology, and particularly on the phonology of Chinese. I have a special interest in tonal phonology. My publications include papers on reduplication, morpho-phonology, prosodic phonology, and feature theory. A recent interest is the structure of animal communication systems, especially birdsong, and their relationship to human language.
