Maria studied medicine at the University of Manchester and subsequently undertook medical rotations at Manchester Royal Infirmary, University College Hospitals London and Barts Health. She currently holds a specialty registrar training number in Infectious Diseases & Medical Microbiology in London. She has combined clinical training with academic training and has gained a distinction in a Masters degree in Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology at UCL. She has worked on research projects both nationally and internationally, including an ECDC-funded mixed-methods study in Riga, Latvia focussing on interventions to improve adherence to TB treatment, as well as leading a systematic review commissioned by FIND in Russian and English to inform WHO TB guidelines. Maria has been instrumental in setting up and running the VIVALDI study which she is a co-investigator on, a national study of the epidemiology of COVID-19 in care homes that has been funded by the Department of Health & Social Care and is led by Dr Laura Shallcross. 

Maria is currently a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Fellow at Institute of Health Informatics, UCL. Her primary supervisor is Dr Laura Shallcross and secondary supervisors are Professor Andrew Copas and Professor Andrew Hayward. 

Her PhD is focussing on the factors that influence the susceptibility of care homes to COVID-19 infections and outbreaks. She is using multiple data sources to answer this question including data collected by the VIVALDI study, routinely collected data, and results of immunology testing carried out by Professor Paul Moss's group at the University of Birmingham. 

Maria teaches on the MSc AIDE course at the Institute for Global Health, Fundamental Principles of Infection and Population Health module and has been a personal tutor to medical students who are intercalating in global health at IGH. She was a mentor on the UK-India Newton-Bhabha Fund Researcher Links workshop in TB which was held in Pune, India in 2019. She is also an educator on the BSAC online course on Infection Prevention in Vulnerable Patients.
