Biography

Dr Leonor Gonçalves is a Pain Neuroscientist researching amygdala activity in chronic pain conditions.

In 2014 Dr Gonçalves became a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow and co-PI in the international collaborative project NeuroPain (European Commission Grant, FP7 HEALTH-2013-INNOVATION-1). This project included  pharmacologically studies with new targets of cannabinoid and sigma/mu-opioid receptors, and in vivo electrophysiological studies of neurones in the amygdala and spinal cord of transgenic mice for mu-opioid, delta-opioid and proenkephalin receptors.

Dr Gonçalves came to UCL in 2009 to work in Prof Tony Dickenson’s lab as Postdoctoral Researcher and member of The London Pain Consortium (Wellcome Trust Strategic Award). Through in vivo electrophysiological recordings she established the asymmetry of amygdala activation in a model of neuropathic pain.

Dr Gonçalves started her PhD studies in 2005 in University of Minho (Portugal) and University of Helsinki (Finland). She was awarded her PhD in Neurobiology of Pain in 2009 with the thesis titled “Plasticity of the pain control system induced by neuropathic pain: the amygdala-medulla system”.

In 2003 she spent one year learning electrophysiology with Prof. Mary Heinricher at the Neurosurgery Department of the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland (USA), after starting her research career as a Junior Researcher at University of Minho (Portugal) in 2002.

Dr Gonçalves is a member of the Athena SWAN UCL Division of Biosciences Committee as a representative of the Department of Neuroscience, Physiology and Pharmacology (NPP). She is the Co-chair for the UCL Neuroscience Careers Network Committee, sitting on the UCL Neuroscience Steering Committee and the UCL Research Staff Consultative Group (RSCG). She co-created the Division of Biosciences Postdoctoral Committee and is a departmental representative for Postdoctoral researchers.
