Biography

  • Began my career as a research scientist, gaining a PhD in bacterial molecular biology before moving into plant molecular biology.  
  • Involved in science policy at the MRC
  • Entered the teaching profession, teaching, leading departments, supporting departments and teachers who were experiencing difficulties.
  • Mentored and then began academically educating pre-service teachers
  • Designed and ran pre-service teacher education courses
  • Designed and ran CPD workshops for teacher educators
  • Research into social justice as it is understood by teachers and teacher educators
  • Research into how sustainability can be meaningfully incorporated in our school curricula
  • Research examining the links between pre-service teacher and teacher educator perceptions of the pedagogical approaches to ITE

Research Groups
Research Summary

I am interested in science education and in the education of science teachers.  My particular areas of interest include:

  • Meaningful incorporation of issues to do with sustainability into science teaching and learning;
  • Looking at how low / no cost practicals can be used to help increase children's exposure to scientific thinking and methods in schools that have no laboratory facilities;
  • Looking at how practical activities can be used to help develop pre-service teachers' subject knowledge and pedagogies in low income countries;
  • Development of thinking about pre and in-service teachers' understanding of issues to do with social justice;
  • The relationship between pre-service teachers' sense of agency and identity and the route they follow into teaching;
  • Factors affecting science teacher recruitment and retention.
