Martin Petrin holds an S.J.D. specializing in corporate law from the University of California, Los Angeles, a Ph.D. in law from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland, and an LL.M. from Columbia University in New York.

Martin has practiced law with a leading international business law firm and has been admitted to the Bar in New York and Switzerland. He has been a visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge Faculty of Law and the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and Private Law in Hamburg. Martin has also acted as a consultant for a governmental law reform project.

Research Summary

Martin’s research interests are in corporate, corporate governance, and business law, often from a comparative perspective. Most recently, his research has focused on corporate regulation, corporate theory and the impact of new technologies, and approaches to conceptualizing the firm. Martin’s research has also examined corporate liability, explored managerial responsibility, and analyzed the policy and theoretical considerations that govern oversight liability jurisprudence. Moreover, other articles, chapters, and books include co-authored monographs on corporate governance, a treatment of the scope of employment in agency law, an in-depth commentary on the law of limited liability companies, and his doctoral thesis on vicarious liability in selected civil and common law jurisdictions.
