Biography

I am Professor in Architecture and Philosophy, the Programme Director of the MA Architectural History, and a PhD Supervisor for Architectural Design and Architectural History and Theory PhD Programmes.

Trained in art history and philosophy, my research and teaching focus on material, political, technological and ecological histories and theories of contemporary architecture and art. I regularly give talks in the UK, EU and overseas, including lectures at: the Universidad de Buenos Aires, University of Pennsylvania, University of Minnesota, Iowa State University, University of Regensburg, The British School in Rome, KTH Stockholm, London School of Economics, KADK Copenhagen and TU Delft.

Research Summary

Since 2010 my research has focused on social, architectural and material ecologies, or 'architectures of care'. My 3-year AHRC collaboration with Dr Beth Lord (Philosophy, Aberdeen) on wellbeing, equality and the UK housing crisis published the film, Equal by Design (2016). Made with film-makers, Lone Star Productions, it interviews key British charities, architects, journalists & academics working on housing issues, including: Shelter & The Equality Trust; architects, Sarah Wigglesworth, Peter Barber & Alex Ely; geographer, Danny Dorling & Oliver Wainwright of The Guardian. It can be viewed here: www.equalbydesign.co.uk

My two edited anthologies, Poetic Biopolitics: Practices of Relation in Architecture and the Arts (co-ed., 2016) and Architectural Relational Ecologies: Architecture, Nature and Subjectivity (2013) publish architects alongside practitioners in the arts, environmental, human rights, social & medical research. Other recent publications include: 'Insecure Predictions', E-Flux Architecture, 24 July 2018; 'Dissimilarity: Spinoza's geometric ratios and housing welfare', Spinoza's Philosophy of Ratio (2018); 'Housing biopolitics and care', Critical and Clinical Cartographies (2017); 'Planetary Aesthetics', Landscape and Agency (2017); 'Humane and inhumane ratios', Asymmetric Labors (2016). My monographs, Space Geometry and Aesthetics: Through Kant and Towards Deleuze (2008) and Irigaray for Architects (2007), examined material spatial relations in philosophy.

Teaching Summary

My teaching is primarily located in the MA Architectural History Programme, including leading the core Critical Methodologies and Dissertation modules. My MA/PhD seminar Materialist Ecological Architectures (Spring term) examines ecological and architectural practices from a materialist perspective. Students learn how architectural histories and theories of ecology are informed by discourses in architecture, art, philosophy, scientific and environmental disciplines; from 17thc theories of substance in Spinoza, 19thc political and scientific materialisms, to present-day planetary debates of the anthropocene, ecofeminism and biopolitics.

I particularly welcome PhD applications on the following areas of study:

- the politics of care and housing histories;
- ecological and materialist practices in architecture, art history and the visual arts;
- critical and feminist approaches to technology/computation.

Completed and current PhD student projects include: the politics of Unger's 1960s studio; materialist politics of contemporary scanning technologies; speculative design after Michelangelo; seventeenth-century architectural transactions; an ecological critique of landfill; feminist critique of digital architecture; Deleuze's diagrams for affective design; Kleist's theory of collapse for experimental film-making; performative art and animal architecture; design through Spinoza's philosophy of joy; a postmodern historiography.

My external appointments include: editorial member of Interstices, Journal of Architecture and the Related Arts. Perviously I have been: Chair, RIBA President's Medals, Dissertation Prize (2014-2017); Editorial board member of Architectural Histories, Journal of the European Architectural History Network, and a regular peer reviewer for Footprint, Edinburgh University Press and The Journal of Architecture. Edinburgh, Goldsmiths, RCA, TU Delft, RMIT, University of the Arts London and UCL, and Chelsea School of Art (BA Fine Art, 2006-10).
