Biography

    Dr. Marinko Sarunic received a BASc in Engineering Physics from Simon Fraser University, located in greater Vancouver, Canada. He continued at SFU for a MASc thesis, under the supervision of Dr. Glenn Chapman on the topic of laser activated materials for microfabrication.

    While completing his thesis work, Dr. Sarunic joined the telecommunications industry to develop optical MEMS switches for small and middle fabric networks. After approximately a year and a half, he left industry to pursue a PhD at Duke University under the direction of Dr. Joseph Izatt.

    Dr. Sarunic's research at Duke University applied optical engineering principles and telecommunications equipment to biological imaging using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). The title of his doctoral dissertation was "Advanced systems design for Fourier domain optical coherence tomography (FD OCT) systems", and included details on the development of a second harmonic spectral domain OCT system, full field quantitative nanoscale imaging, and phase processing algorithms to extend the imaging depth of OCT systems to accommodate the ocular anterior segment.

    During the summer of 2006, Dr. Sarunic joined the California Institute of Technology as a postdoctoral researcher in the Biophotonics group lead by Dr. Changhuei Yang.  At CalTech, Dr. Sarunic’s research included the development of a forward image endoscopic probe for use during ophthalmic surgery. Later in 2006, Dr. Sarunic joined his alma mater Simon Fraser University as a faculty member, and continued his work in optical imaging for ophthalmology and vision science.

    Presently, Dr. Sarunic is the Moorfields Eye Charity Chair of Advanced Ocular Imaging at University College London, and cross-appointed between the Institute of Ophthalmology and the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering.


Research Summary

    My research investigates medical imaging using light. My work combines lasers, electronics, and programming to generate high resolution 3Dimages of biological tissues. The main application area is in ophthalmology andvision science for the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the eye.One of our main focuses is Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT),which provides micrometer-resolution images using the interference of near-infrared light. My lab designs and builds OCT imaging systems, and uses them in the eye clinics to help understand the causes of vision robbing diseases, and to assist clinicians with making diagnosis and monitoring the progress of treatments.
