  • Lecturer in Construction Management

I am a Lecturer in Construction Management at the Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction, and I am the leader of B.Sc. (Hons) Project Management for Construction programme.

I am an experienced construction professional and academic with more than 6 years of industry experience followed by an academic career since 2012.

I worked in bidding and commercial management for large civils contractors for most of my time in the industry following an initial position as an assistant project manager.

Before joining UCL, I worked as a lecturer at Birmingham City and London South Bank Universities, producing high-impact research, and developing and teaching a wide range of courses focusing on the construction industry and the built environment.

I was awarded the degree of Ph.D. in 2016 with my thesis titled 'The practice of interdisciplinary design in BIM-enabled projects'.

Research Summary

My research explores the conditions and processes of value creation across the lifecycle of construction projects. Focusing on the organisational practices of digital innovation, systems integration, and social value, I have developed a body of work that established a novel understanding of project-value-as-practice.

My work on digital innovation in the built environment focused on organizational transformation at macro-level (e.g., changing routines, order, and politics of value) as well as human-computer interaction and decision-making at micro-level (i.e., everyday interactions with computers and other people). I studied the implications of digital innovations, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), using a range of theories including commodification, sensemaking, practice-thinking, competitive advantage, knowledge management and productivity paradox. I have also previously led an academia-industry collaboration, which developed the information requirements of, and an information categorisation framework for, an early design sustainability analysis software in construction. I have supervised two Ph.D. projects on digitalisation in construction through to their completion, and I am currently supervising another two Ph.D. projects on this topic.

Apart from my focus on digital innovation, I have published several papers on systems integration in construction. The three major foci of my work in this area have been design collaboration for systems integration, systemic risk management, and a systems approach to safety in construction.

Another research interest for me is social value in construction. I am currently focusing on improving our understanding and implementation of social value in construction by drawing upon non-representational theories of space and place.

Teaching Summary

I am the leader of B.Sc. (Hons) Project Management for Construction programme at the Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction.

Through my 10 years of experience in the UK higher education, I taught several undergraduate and postgraduate modules focusing on innovation, organisation, technology and management in construction and the built environment. I also led dissertation modules both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels with large cohorts.

I have supervised more than 20 undergraduate and more than 50 masters' students.

Currently, I deliver Professional Skills in Project Management undergraduate module and The Management of Construction Projects postgraduate module at the Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction.
