Mike joined the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in 2001 after graduating with an MSci in physics from Imperial College London. His work initially focused on developing techniques for measuring the optical properties of materials. He continued his work in applied optics by investigating general metrological techniques for adaptive optics (AO) and exploring how AO and wavefront sensing techniques can be applied to improve image quality in optical microscopy.

Mike completed his PhD in 2014 following study part time at Imperial College London whilst working at NPL, with a thesis titled ‘Overcoming resolution limits in fluorescence microscopy with adaptive optics and structured illumination’.

Since 2010 Mike has worked in NPL’s Biometrology Group where he is currently a Principal Research Scientist leading the development and application of fluorescence microscopy and related bioimaging methods, including super-resolution (structured illumination), light sheet, confocal and widefield techniques, and computational image analysis.

Mike joined UCL’s Department of Computer Science as a Senior Research Associate in 2015. In 2019 he joined UCL’s Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS) where he is currently a Principal Research Fellow. Mike leads a multidisciplinary research team in the UCL TouchLab exploring computational imaging and light-based micromanipulation tools for life science applications from fundamental biology to diagnostic imaging and digital pathology.

In 2011 Mike was awarded Chartered Physicist status by the Institute of Physics. He is a member of several national and international microscopy and standards committees including the light microscopy section committee of the Royal Microscopical Society (RMS) and CPW/172 of the British Standards Institute (BSI).
