Research Summary
Neuropathology of Focal Cortical Dysplasia, Hippocampal Sclerosis in epilepsy with clinical-neuroradiology and quantitative pathological correlations: As part of a group I have been studying aspects of focal cortical dysplasia in surgical resections from patients with epilepsy, including cell cycle regulation in balloon cells and more recently examining cortical layer specific markers and expression of developmentally regulated proteins. I have also been studying milder cortical dysplasias in association with hippocampal sclerosis using image analysis and quantiative neuropathological methods and correlating these results with pre-operative neuroimaging in an aim to deliniate this pathology. In hippocampal sclerosis we have been examining aetiological aspects of the process of granule cell dispersion in a large series and the potential contribution of neurogenesis. Currently we are evaluating more widespread pathology, including the mesial temporal structures, in patients with long standing epilepsy and hippocampal sclerosis in a large series of post mortem cases using quantitative neuropathological methods.
