Appointment
  • Research Facility Contracts Manager
  • Dept of Biochemical Engineering
  • Faculty of Engineering Science
Biography
Lourdes’ current role is Research Facility Contracts Manager in the Department of Biochemical Engineering. She facilitates the use of the pilot plant capabilities of the Advanced Centre for Biochemical Engineering for external/contract work.

Previously Lourdes was a research associate within Department of Biochemical Engineering her work was mainly focus on microbial fermentation. Lourdes has a PhD and MSc in Biochemical Engineering from UCL and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City
Research Summary
Lourdes PhD research involved mammalian cell culture and the development of analytical techniques to characterise mammalian cell physiology during fermentation; and the use of computational fluid dynamics to simulate the hydrodynamic environment in the bioreactor.

Following this, she was part of a research project which aimed to test in fermenters a new generation of E. coli protein export platforms based on the Tat pathway instead of Sec pathways. Afterwards she was part of the Ultra low-cost transferable automated platform for vaccine manufacturing project (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation "Grand Challenges funding for Innovation in Vaccine Manufacturing for Global Markets" in collaboration with MIT and University of Kansas). In this project Lourdes optimised P. pastoris fermentation to improve product quality and titre of a rotavirus vaccine.

Her research interest is in bioprocess, developing optimal small scale fermentation which facilitate downstream processes.
Teaching Summary
Lourdes was responsible for development and delivery of group teaching scenarios to first year Biochemical Engineering undergraduates students as part of the Integrated Engineering Programme
