After completing my undergraduate studies in Psychology and a Research Master's in Cognitive Neuroscience at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands in 2015, I obtained a TopTalent grant to do my PhD at the Donders Institute under supervision of Prof. Marcel van Gerven. During this time, I used  machine learning and neuroimaging to characterize the neural overlap of imagined and perceived stimulus representations. After my PhD, I obtained two Postdoctoral Fellowships (Rubicon and Marie Curie) in 2019 to investigate perceptual reality monitoring at the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging at University College London in collaboration with Prof. Stephen Fleming and Dr. Peter Kok. There, I am currently working as a Senior Research Fellow.
Research Summary
My research focuses on the neural mechanisms underlying mental imagery: our ability to generate sensory experiences in the absence of the associated external input. I use a combination of neuroimaging (fMRI & MEG), psychophysics and computational modelling to investigate (1) to what extent imagery relies on the same neural machinery as perception, (2) whether this overlap leads to confusion between reality and imagination and (3) how our brain keeps imagined and perceived signals separate.
