Research Summary

My research interests are at the interface between health policy and service delivery, management and organisation of health care. They include:

  • relationships between, and configurations of, health care organisations (for example, horizontal and vertical integration)
  • the management of major system change
  • governance systems
  • organisational aspects of quality and safety improvement

Another key feature of my research programme is a focus on inter-relationships between macro (policy), meso (organisation), and micro (clinical services) in improving health care e.g. how national policies are implemented (or not) at local level; the impact of external regulatory frameworks within organisations; and the relationship between organisational interventions and care within clinical micro systems.

I am currently chief investigator on the following major research programmes:

Innovations in major system reconfiguration in England: a study of the effectiveness, acceptability and processes of implementation of two models of stroke care. (NIHR HS&DR Programme)

Quality and Safety in European Union Hospitals: A Research-based Guide for Implementing Best Practice and a Framework for Assessing Performance (QUASER). (EU FP7)

The role of context in improvement: best evidence review (The Health Foundation)

Team working in Academic Health Sciences Centres (NIHR PhD fellowship)

I am also a co-applicant on the following major research programmes:

Evaluating an innovative approach to the diagnostic processes for chronic eye disease: a feasibility study (Special Trustees of Moorfields Eye Hospital, led by Prof Paul Foster, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology)

Evaluating hand hygiene interventions and their ability to reduce healthcare associated infection (Australian National Health and Medical Research Council, led by Dr Nick Graves Queensland University of Technology)
