  • Associate Professor (Teaching)
  • Dept of Mechanical Engineering
  • Faculty of Engineering Science

Nelia graduated from the University of Seville in 2007 with a BSc and MSc in Chemical Engineering specialised in Environmental Technologies. She received her PhD in Combustion and Carbon Capture Technologies in Cranfield University in 2014. After working as a Research Fellow in Energy Process Modelling developing simulation models for different types of processes related to power generation (i.e., gas turbines cycles, energy from waste via pyrolysis, CCS, etc.), she decided to focus on teaching in HE.

Her experimental background is related to design and operation of bench and pilot scale plants in the field of energy and power generation using renewables and carbon capture technologies.

Research Themes
Research Summary

I have been involved in projects focused on oxy-combustion of coal and biomass, post-combustion technology (chemical absorption), energy storage when using renewable energies, or design and commissioning as part as the Nano Membrane Toilet project (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation).

Teaching Summary

After ten years focused on researching I decided to concentrate on teaching, as consequence of completing the PGCert and the range of teaching techniques I learnt about during the course.

Since 2017 I have been working as a Teaching Fellow/Lecturer at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University College London, where I teach various modules to the first years as well as supervising third year individual projects and fourth year team projects. I became Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in June 2018 and am currently preparing my application for  the Senior Fellowship (SFHEA).

I am part of the team running Mechspace, where I look after the Health and Safety. I enable that the students can design and build their projects while keeping their work to optimal safety industrial standards.
