Research Groups
Research Summary

Nick is a housing specialist whose research focuses on UK planning policy as it pertains to housing delivery and as it affects rural communities.  He has conducted research for a wide range of funding bodies.  His research has been disseminated in 18 published books, mainly dealing with housing, planning, rural communities and the countryside, and in a number of peer-reviewed articles and book contributions.  His research currently focuses on:

>Rural restructuring and its consequences, extending to economic development and housing affordability (I have two new projects focused on this issue; one is the culmination of recent work and takes the form of a book on ‘Rural Places and Planning’ (2022); the second is a funded project on how rural housing interventions/innovations overcome critical planning, land and finance barriers, which will be published in the book ‘Village Housing’ (2022)

>Housing cost crises and inequality (This is the subject of a book, ‘Whose Housing Crisis’, published with Policy Press (2019) and also the subject recent funded work with the Resolution Foundation);

>Community engagements with planning, (Past projects have focused on this topic, as have two key books: Neighbourhood Planning (2012) and Community Action and Planning (2014))

These foci represent my ‘triad’ of key interests: rural areas, housing and community governance and planning.
