Biography

Dr. Mukadam completed her Medical Sciences undergraduate degree at Cambridge University with an intercalated BA in Experimental Psychology. She then studied Clinical Medicine at the University of Oxford and trained in general medicine and surgery at Oxford and Newcastle. Her psychiatric training was completed on the Royal Free Psychiatric Training rotation and she obtained her CCT in Old Age Psychiatry in 2013. Dr. Mukadam obtained a doctoral research training fellowship from the NIHR to design and test an intervention to encourage South Asian people to seek help earlier for dementia. During her PhD, Dr. Mukadam has collaborated on a number of studies, continuing her interest in inequalitites related to ethnicity and expanding her research interests to include the epidemiology of dementia. Dr. Mukadam's postdoctoral work is focused on using inter-ethnic epidemiology to find new ways of preventing and treating dementia.

Research Summary

Dr. Mukadam is an Alzheimer's Society senior research fellow at UCL Division of Psychiatry and an Old Age Psychiatrist in the UCLH Liaison Psychiatry team. Dr Mukadam is a member of The Lancet Standing Commission on Dementia Prevention, Intervention and Care. She is a member of the Clinical Leadership Group for the NHS England dementia clinical network and is deputy lead of the Division of Psychiatry's ethnic diversity working group. She is interested in inequalities in access to dementia services and has designed and tested an intervention to encourage earlier help-seeking for dementia in South Asian people in the UK. She is also interested in the epidemiology of dementia, particularly environmental risk factors, dementia prevention and how these may differ by ethnicity. 

Teaching Summary

Dr. Mukadam has taught on the Mental Health and Dementia MScs at UCL and supervises MSc and PhD students. She is co-lead on the Current Research in Dementia Module.
