Prof Okhravi completed a 4 year laboratory and clinical
research programme at the Institute of Ophthalmology, UCL, and obtained a PhD
in Ophthalmology, in 1999. Her PhD thesis described the successful use of
molecular methods to diagnose intraocular infection. She was appointed as a
Welcome Trust fellow, and has obtained grants in excess of >£1,040,000 from
The Wellcome Trust, Fight for Sight, Moorfields Eye Hospital Biomedical
Research Centre, Special Trustees, Friends of Moorfields and Oclyx Ltd.
She is a member of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (at
Moorfields Eye Hospital), the NETSCC health technology assessment (HTA)
college of experts, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology
(ARVO), an alumnus of Ashridge Business School, and a Member of the College of
Assessors ( at The Health Foundation)
Current research interests include:
Effectiveness in Ophthalmology education (undergraduate and
post-graduate multidisciplinary students and staff groups)
Organisational effectiveness ( in particular in relation to
patient safety, and 'too much medicine')
Public and patient involvement (in education, clinical
surgical outcomes and clinical research)
Macular oedema (especially that secondary to diabetic eye
disease and uveitis)
Infective uveitides (Challenges of diagnosis)
Prof Okhravi has
served in an Education leadership role since 2004. She holds the titles of

of Health Sciences Education, Barts and the London School of Medicine and
Dentistry at Queen Mary, University of London.
Prof Okhravi has
a keen interest in education of health care professionals, both at
undergraduate and at postgraduate level, with wide experience of teaching
clinicians, ophthalmologists and allied health professionals. Since 2004, as a
clinical and surgical trainer, Ms Okhravi has shaped the training of several
thousand medical students, educated 36 teaching fellows and circa 350 junior
doctors. She is renowned internationally for her clinical work, research and
education expertise and the involvement of patients in every aspect of her
work.
During this time
she has expanded the teaching capabilities of the Trust now looking after the
needs of 800+ medical students from 4 different Universities per annum. She has
developed, and appoints yearly, 3 clinical Undergraduate teaching fellows for
whom she acts as Educational Supervisor. Her team of Consultant
Ophthalmologists with dedicated protected time in their job plans to teach has
grown from none to 5 over last 10 years including a Deputy Director of
Education who commenced her duties in 2014.
Prof Okhravi is
founder and co-chair of the Moorfields Academy, an informal educational
networking forum focussed on multidisciplinary education. The Moorfields
Academy celebrated its 10th year in 2020.
