Research Summary

I do research in

(i) geophysical fluid dynamics, including rotating stratified flows, rotating hydraulics, coastal outflows, geophysical vortices and topographic effects on geophysical flows. For example, collaborative work with Ted Johnson has lead to the development of analytical and numerical methods capable of computing vortex motion in complex domains e.g. barriers with gaps, multiple islands.

(ii) complex variable methods applied to 2D free-boundary problems. This includes vortex dynamics, Hele-Shaw flows and Laplacian growth, industrial coating problems, and the geometry of river valleys and natural drainage networks.

Teaching Summary

GM01/MM01: Advanced Modelling Mathematical Techniques (approx. 15 lectures on complex variable methods)
