Biography

I am an Associate Professor in social science at Social Research Institute at University College London (UCL). Before joining UCL, I was a postdoctoral research fellow at Nuffield College and Department of Sociology, University of Oxford. 

I have obtained a PhD (cum laude--with distinction) in sociology from Utrecht University, the Netherlands in 2013. I also hold a MSc degree (cum laude) from the research master program “Sociology and Social Research” of Utrecht University and a BA degree in business administration from Bogazici University, Turkey.

Research Summary

I have two main research strands: 

  • Cooperation, trust, and prosocial behaviour. 
  • Political sociology of religion (broadly defined). 
I use laboratory experiments, natural experiments, observational data, and formal modeling as research tools. In addition, I have worked on statistical methods including multilevel models (using, e.g. Stata/GLLAMM), nonlinear latent variable modeling (using Mplus), and Bayesian item response models (using OpenBugs, RStan).


My work has been published in:

  • sociology (e.g. American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, European Sociological Review, Social Forces), 
  • political science (Electoral Studies), 
  • social psychology and epidemiology (Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Social Psychology Quarterly, American Journal of Epidemiology), and
  • game theory (Games) 
journals. 

Teaching Summary

I am a member of UCL Q-Step centre and my current teaching roles include:

  • Module leader: Social Network Analysis (3rd year)
  • Module leader: Game Theory for Social Sciences (3rd year)

 Previously, I have led modules:

  • Advanced Topics in Data Science (3rd year Q-Step module)
  • Data Analysis (2nd year Q-Step module)
  • Principles of Social Science Research (1st year Q-Stepmodule)
  • Quantitative Research Methods (2nd year)
