Dr Oliver Gerstenberg profile picture

Oliver studied law and philosophy at the universities of Heidelberg and Frankfurt/M, where he obtained his doctorate in law. He has been a Jean Monnet Fellow at the EUI (Florence), a JF Kennedy Fellow at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard University and a LAPA (Law and Public Affairs) Fellow at Princeton University. In addition, he has been a Visiting Fellow at the British Institute for International and Comparative Law (BIICL), and he is an Associate Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Legal Studies (IALS) and a Fellow at the UCL European Institute: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/european-institute/people/fellows/dr-oliver-gerstenberg.

Research Summary

Oliver's research focuses on:

Multilevel constitutionalism (in the EU and beyond), conflicts between judicialization and democratic legitimacy beyond the state; emergent democratic-experimentalist forms of governance;

Social Constitutionalism (in its normative, historical, and institutional dimensions);

European private law (theory);

Jurisprudence and normative political theory: political liberalism (Rawls) and Kant's political and jurisprudential thought.

His recent monograph is on 'Euroconstitutionalism and Its Discontents' (OUP: Oxford Constitutional Theory Series: 2018).

He is happy to consider PhD applications on any of the above topics.

Teaching Summary

Oliver is module convenor of the LLB EU Law module.

He is also convenor of thr LLM module 'Constitutional and Institutional Law of the EU.'

He teaches a 'Big Book Seminar on Kant's 'Perpetual Peace. A Philosophical Sketch.'

Oliver is recipient of UCL's EXALT Teaching Award 2018.

He also occasionally teaches EU Law at the Institute of Law in Jersey as a visiting lecturer.
