Research Summary

Regions of suppressed or reduced recombination can keep co-adapted gene complexes permanently linked, and the resulting supergenes have important consequences to adaptive potential and the power of purifying selection to remove deleterious variation. Sex chromosomes are a notable example of supergenes. I am using the young sex chromosome system of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, to study variation and patterns of genetic polymorphism in order to understand the evolutionary dynamics of recombination suppression in natural populations.
