Peter has been a general dental practitioner for over 40 years before in 2008 becoming a part-time lecturer at UCL Eastman Dental Institute, Department of CPD. He currently has the grade of Associate Clinical Professor (Teaching) and regularly teaches on the Restorative Dental Practice programme Year 1 (Certificate).
My main role on the Restorative Dental Practice programme is to supervise the MSc research students during their research year. This involves me in developing appropriate research projects, designing the research protocols and supervising the students undertaking the projects.
My additional role is as Director of the Master's degree in Sports Dentistry-Oral Health in Sport. This is the first Master's degree of its kind in the world and was developed from a successful CPD course into a three year part-time Masters delivered as an online blended learning experience.
His research profile is concerned with postgraduate dental education, having received a PhD in dental education in 2017. His thesis looked specifically at how confidence impacts on future learning of GDPs and whether certain teaching pedagogy lent themselves to an increase in confidence more than others. Current interests include the need to teach students how to reflect on their learning and student feedback, which is very topical and important theme. Peter has recently designed the first Sports Dentistry Master's degree course after successfully running a CPD course for several years and is about to launch a text book on Sports Dentistry aimed at GDPs and Sports Medicine colleagues.
Peter has been involved in several Sports Dentistry research projects undertaken at UCL Eastman Dental Institute, particularly looking at the impact of oral health on sporting performance.
In addition to day to day teaching, Peter supervises all part-time master's students at the department of CPD, advising them about their research projects, dissertation writing and qualitative data analysis.
He has experience of speaking to national and international conferences on his educational research projects as well as Sports Dentistry. He now runs and is a principle teacher on the sports dentistry MSc
