Biography

Paul Greening has been a lecturer in structural engineering at UCL since 2001. His PhD was completed in 1999 under the supervision of Prof Nick Lieven of the Aerospace Engineering department at the University of Bristol. The research studied the sensitivity of measured structural dynamic data to loading and deformity. He graduated with a BEng in civil engineering from Bristol in 1994.

Paul has completed two yearly terms as vice-chairman and then chairman of the Society for Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics (SECED) between 2004 and 2008.

From 2008-2913 Paul was UCL Deputy Dean of Students (Welfare).

Since 2008 he has been director of studies of the department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering. He is responsible for overseeing all taught programmes in the department. He chairs the CEGE teaching committee and sits on the Faculty teaching committee.

 

Research Summary

Paul's diverse technical research interests generally have a vibration/dynamics theme. 
Following on from his PhD he has continued to investigate how loading in a structure alters dynamic response. An efficient and robust means of identifying absolute load patterns in redundant framed structures from dynamic measurements has been developed through a PhD project carried out under his supervision.

He continues to be interested in the variability of measured dynamic data from structures as they experience different loading and environmental conditions.

Paul is well known for his work on the use of "bender elements" to determine the small strain shear stiffness of soil. He supervised an EPSRC funded programme of research with Cambridge Insitu Ltd. to develop an objective and automatic method of processing the raw experimental results. A low cost system for taking measurements using bender elements was developed at UCL and continues to be used in laboratories worldwide.

Through a collaboration with UCL's Centre for Sustainable Heritage, Paul has become interested in the measuring and mitigating against the effects of ground borne vibration on historic structures. 

A Royal Academy of Engineering Secondment to Arup's Advanced Technology and Research group has led to an interest in the extent to which current reinforced concrete models capture the dynamic behaviour of RC structures in practice. 

Paul has also supervised projects and published papers on orientation dependence of structures to simulated ground motion records and post-tsunami evacuation modelling.

Since 2013 he has been Director of the UCL Centre for Engineering education. He has embarked on commissioned research in this area.

Teaching Summary

Paul teaches structural engineering as part of the first year Mechanisms Cluster. He organises the first scenario for undergraduate students. This is an intensive week long poject that undergraduates encounter midway through their first term at UCL. He contributes to Structures 3, coordinates Structures 4 and helps out with teaching of computation.
