Mr Paul Mullins
  • Research Assistant in Urban Design & Public Health
  • Epidemiology & Public Health
  • Institute of Epidemiology & Health
  • Faculty of Pop Health Sciences

Paul first joined UCL CASA in 2015 as an MSc student on the Smart Cities and Urban Analytics course. His interest in smart cities and the use of new technologies in the built environment emanates from his time spent in South Korea, which led to research presentations at two international conferences and lead-authoring a journal article on smart cities, that was published in the Journal of Urban Technology in April 2016 (‘The Evolution of ICT Economic Growth Strategy “IT839” and Green Cities in South Korea: A New Paradigm for Economic Growth’).

After completing the MSc at CASA, Paul joined as a Research Assistant in 2016 to continue his work on smart cities as part of the 'Applicable Urban Informatics' project funded by the MacArthur Foundation. Paul’s research is concerned with how technologies can be used to make cities more equitable and inclusive, as well as reveal new insights regarding aspects of urban society that are otherwise rendered invisible through traditional data collection and processing methods.

Prior to joining CASA Paul worked in architecture and urban design for almost 10 years working on government and private sector projects for several large organisations as well as multi-disciplinary design practices across the UK and internationally. Paul also holds an MSc Architecture and Architecture from Seoul National University, and a MFA in Fine Art from The Royal Academy Schools of Art, London.

Research Summary

Paul is currently a Research Assistant at CASA working on 'Applicable Urban Informatics', a MacArthur Foundation-funded research project examining the translation of new digital tools and technologies for practical applications in cities.
