Biography
Paulina Moya Santiagos is a Doctoral Candidate in Education, funded by ANID (Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo, Chile) in the UCL Centre for Applied Linguistics at the UCL Institute of Education under the supervision of Professors John Gray and John O'Regan. She is an English Language Teacher and she holds a TESOL MA from UCL Institute of Education for which she received a distinction, a BA degree in Secondary Education and a BA degree in Language and Arts. In Chile, which is her home country, she was for a time a spokesperson representing the teachers from the commune of Ñuñoa, in Santiago, and from 2011 to 2016 she was elected as Vice-President of the Teachers' Union in Ñuñoa. She has participated in several colloquia in Chile in which she has given presentations about interactive and innovative ways of teaching English as a foreign language in public schools and educational policy. She was also a panellist on the panel of experts organised by the Chilean Ministry of Education to discuss the topic “Revolution or Evolution? The impact of Digital Literacies in Chilean classrooms in the 21st century”, alongside the distinguished Chilean philosopher Humberto Maturana. She has presented her research in different seminars around the world (ICSEI, ICTEL, TERA, UNAB, among others), in both Spanish and English. Additionally, she was chosen as a semi-finalist and one of the twenty best teachers in Chile by the acclaimed Global Teacher Prize in 2018. That same year, the major of Ñuñoa and the education committee in the commune awarded her with the distinction of 'The Best teacher of Ñuñoa'.
Research Summary
Her research project seeks to explore and elucidate what makes some public school students so committed to social struggles and if there is any link between this commitment and the pedagogy applied by their teachers.
Teaching Summary
Paulina has worked for thirteen years as a schoolteacher in public institutions and for fourteen years as a university lecturer in Chile. Currently, she is a postgraduate lecturer on the Masters in TEFL at the Universidad Andrés Bello in Santiago. She teaches the module ‘Methodology and Creativity II’ in which she employs interactive methods for teaching English as a second and foreign language, and for analysing and evaluating educational policies implemented in public and private education in the country.
