Dr Philippe Duffour profile picture
  • Senior Lecturer
  • Dept of Civil, Environ &Geomatic Eng
  • Faculty of Engineering Science

Philippe Duffour has a background in engineering and maths (Ecole Centrale de Lyon), specialising in Structural Dynamics and Vibration for his PhD from Cambridge University. Before joining UCL as a lecturer in 2005, he was a research associate in non-destructive testing in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London. He is co-director of UCLs EngD in Urban Sustainability and Resilience and also the Departmental Graduate Tutor (Research). On secondment to Arup in 2007 he developed an efficient numerical tool for rapid prediction of railway noise from elevated structures.
He is also part of a group of CEGE academics and researchers who are interested in philosophy of engineering and engineering ethics in particular in relation to the long term responsibility of engineers towards society.

Research Summary

Background in
Vibration, friction, friction-induced vibration, brake noise. Accurate modelling of friction-induced vibration in simplified systems such as pin-on-disc rigs. Interaction between dynamics and tribology.
Non-destructive testing, crack detection. Vibro-acoustic modulation for NDT purposes. Heat generation from fatigue cracks in vibrating structures. Physical modelling and application to NDT. Interaction with damping measurements and damping modelling.

Research in
Adaptive building. EngD Project with Expedition Engineering. Investigating the potential of adaptive building concept for improved design and (environmental) performance of buildings (EngD with Expedition Engineering)
Performance and design of solar therman chimmney. Potential of fabric structures for extremely tall chimneys. (EngD with Lindstrandt Technologies Ldt)
Prediction of Railway Noise. Radiation from elevated structures and groundborne transmission (RAE Industrial Secondment with Arup).
Energy Dissipating Devices for Earthquake Engineering. In particular Tuned-mass Dampers, Viscous Dampers and Base Isolation Systems (Collaboration with TARRC and Taylor Devices Ltd)
Engineering Ethics. Ethics Teaching to Engineers. Relationship between Engineers and Society. Engineering Responsibility.
