Research Summary
I am interested in the roles played by neurotransmitters, their receptors, and by gap junctions in the transmission of information within the adult and developing retina. Recent work includes studies of the role of Ca2+ waves and ATP release via gap junction hemichannels in signaling between the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and the neural retina at early times in development and the importance of this for the generation new retinal neurons. In other studies I have examined the role of gap junctions in the regulation of retinal cell migration. I am also interested in the function of pericytes as mediators of the control of capillary diameter in the retina and brain and the neural and glial signals that affect capillary blood flow.
