Research Themes

Research Summary
I am interested in the study of the variation in the degree of mineralization assessed at the micron level of the biological hard tissues - bone, cartilage, dentine and enamel. Differences may result from age, pathology, exercise or location within the skeleton and are able to be measured using quantitative backscattered electron imaging (qBSE) in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Data derived from such experimental results of man and mammalian tissue obtained under rigorous protocols form the background to the development of Monte Carlo techniques which simulate the result of the calcification processes of these hard tissues. These techniques combine an understanding of basic physics relating to electron scattering in solids and apply them to low mean atomic weight materials in which bone must be categorized.
