I studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, graduating in 1995. Following this I obtained an MSc in Applied Optics from Imperial College and a DPhil in Atomic and Laser Physics from Oxford University. From 2001-04 I was a postdoc in the UCL Laser Cooling Group. Since 2004 I head the Optical Tweezers Group, applying optical trapping methods to biological, soft matter and nanoscale systems. From 2014 I am co-head of the Biological Physics section in the Department of Physics & Astronomy.
Optical tweezers (in particular applications of optical trapping to biological and nanoscale systems), optical binding, optical vortices, vectorial diffraction theory.
