Biography

Prof Patty Kostkova is Professor in Digital Health and the Director of UCL IRDR Centre for Digital Public Health in Emergencies. Patty was appointed ISI Foundation Fellow for her research into digital epidemiology. She was a consultant at WHO, ECDC, Telefonica and Foundation Merieux. Over two decades, Prof Kostkova has been an internationally leading researcher in the novel interdisciplinary domain of digital public health.


Her research includes mobile gamified training and education interventions to improve health awareness and health capacity, and big data early-warning and prediction systems for infectious outbreaks and epidemics in Brazil, south Africa, Nigeria, Nepal, Middle East and Europe.


Prof Kostkova holds a number of prestigious prizes: she won the Innovator of the Year 2019,  was a finalist for the Woman of the Year Award 2017 and the Team Leader of the Year Award in 2018 by Computing Women in IT Excellence Awards competition. Her research was also awarded the EHI 2012 Prize – finalist in Category “Best Use of social media in healthcare” and BCS and Computing: UK IT Industry Awards 2012 – finalist in Category „IT project demonstrating most effective use of collaborative technology'. 


Regular invited and keynote speaker at prestigious institutions and international conferences, Patty published over 200 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. She is the Editor in chief of the Frontiers in Digital Public Health, and  the General and Scientific Chair of the International Digital Public Health Conference series since 2009 (www.acm-digitalhealth.org).  Her research was extensively covered by international media including the Medi1TV, BBC, AFP, Vancouver Sun and Malaysian Insider.

    Research Summary

    Prof Patty Kostkova is Professor in Digital Health and the Director of UCL IRDR Centre for Digital Public Health in Emergencies. She is a world leading researcher in the novel interdisciplinary domain of digital public health.

    Her research covers wide spectrum of digital public health ranging from mobile gamified training app to combat the zika virus in Brazil, increasing resilience and disaster preparedness in women in Nepal to strengthening antibiotic stewardship using game-based training in Nigeria and DR-TB management in South Africa. Her team's research into Big Data for public and global health includes one of the first studies exploring the potential of Twitter for early-warning of swineflu 2009. She also leads the iNational Resource for Infection Control (iNRIC, www.nric.org.uk), established the ECDC training resource FEM Wiki (www.femwiki.com) and educational games for children edugames4all (www.edugames4all.org).

    During the COVID-19 emergency, Prof Kostkova has been advising WHO on a digital strategy in the context of COVID-19, while her team rapidly prototyped a gamified app for citizens to monitor compliance with government stay-at-home policy and lifestyle changes to improve wellbeing, and also work with WHO on analyzing social media discourse on Covid-19.

    Prof Kostkova’s research successes were recognized by a number of prestigious awards including:

    - UK IT Industry Awards 2012 – finalist in Category „IT project demonstrating most effective use of collaborative technology
    - EHI (Ehealth Insider) 2012 Prize – finalist in Category “Best Use of social media in healthcare”
    - my researcher David Farrell received The Best Student Paper GALA Award. VS-Games 2012, The Best Interdisciplinary Research Project in the 4th Annual City University Research Competition 2010.

    She was appointed an  Advisory Board member and Expert advisor at ECDC Knowledge Management Working Group, NHS National Knowledge Service TB Pilot, UNDP and EC JRC.  She was also named BMJ “Idea Champion” when her team wa one of the very first to demonstrate potential of social media for predicting  receiving a wide media coverage including a BMJ scientific film: Medical Innovations: Twitter Epidemics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JNogEk-pnM)

    Patty published over 200 peer-reviewed papers, a number of book chapters and her research was extensively covered by international media including the Medi1TV, BBC, AFP, the Vancouver Sun, the Malaysian Insider and others.

    Teaching Summary

    Prof Kostkova is teaching the topical postgraduate module 'Digital Health: Epidemics and Emergencies in the Era of Big Data' and core postgraduate module on 'Data Analysis and Interpretation' She supervises a number of PhD students.
