Research Summary

Dr Penny Amott has worked for UCL- Institute of Education for over 10 years. Since 2011, she has worked within Initial Teacher Education as a tutor, a Primary English specialist for the Primary PGCE and Teach First programmes and is now Programme leader for the Primary PGCE. Previously, she was a member of the Reading Recovery National Trainer Team involved in the national implementation of Every Child a Reader (2007-11).

She was awarded a Doctorate in Education in 2016. Her research interests include: professional identity, teacher educator identity and narrative life history method.

She is an experienced Primary teacher with over 20 years teaching in the Primary, Early Years and Special Education sectors and has international experience also. She has expertise in literacy education and supporting children with reading difficulties. She is a strong advocate of the importance of phonics as part of the effective teaching of early reading, both within ITE and her work internationally.
