Before joining the Institute of Education as Lecturer in Mathematics Education, Pete taught for 12 years in comprehensive schools in London, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Brighton, including 3 years as a Head of Mathematics. He also taught for 3 years in a rural school in Kenya with Voluntary Services Overseas. Other posts in education include 5 years as Mathematics Consultant, then Software Development Manager, for SMILE Mathematics, and 2 years as a local authority Secondary Mathematics Consultant.
Pete is currently one of two Assistant Editors for the London Review of Education (LRE) journal and a member of the International Committee of Mathematics, Education & Society (MES). He recently served as an Executive Member (Online Communications Officer) for the British Society for Research into Learning Mathematics (BSRLM).
Pete established and has been Convenor of the Teaching Maths for Social Justice Network since April 2021 - a network for teachers of mathematics in all school phases committed to addressing issues of equity and social justice in the classroom. In the past, Pete has been elected as a divisional secretary for the National Union of Teachers and a board member of Amnesty International UK.
Pete's research interests include issues of equity and social justice in mathematics teaching, critical mathematics education, philosophies of mathematics education, visible and invisible pedagogy, curriculum change, and participatory action research.

Pete has been working on the 'Primary Maths and Social Justice' collaborative research project, with Dr Caroline Hilton (UCL Institute of Education), Joel Kelly (The Blue School) and 6 teacher researchers, since November 2021.
Pete recently worked on the EEF-funded 'Student Grouping Study' (investigating the effects of setting and mixed attainment grouping) led by Professor Jeremy Hodgen and Dr Becky Taylor.
Pete has reviewed more than 45 papers submitted to 11 academic journals including Journal of Curriculum Studies, London Review of Education, British Journal of Educational Studies, Pedagogy Culture & Society, Research in Mathematics Education.
Pete has been Subject Lead for the PGCE Secondary Mathematics programme at UCL Institute of Education since 2017 (and a tutor on the programme since 2013). He also teaches on the MA in Mathematics Education programme, Mathematical Education for Physical and Mathematical Sciences (undergraduate) module, as well as supervising EdD and PhD students.
He has previously been the Subject Lead for the Teach First Secondary Mathematics programme, a tutor on the PGCE Physics with Mathematics programme, and a tutor on the PGCE Mathematics (SCITT) programme.
Pete has been an External Examiner for the PGCE Mathematics programmes at the University of Greenwich and the University of Exeter, and for the PGDE Secondary Partnership Induction Model (STEM subjects) at the University of Dundee.
