Biography

Following my law master with Newcastle University, I received a fully funded PhD Studentship in 2000 with the Business School of Hertfordshire University and worked there, after PhD, as senior lecturer in economics and finance, before joining the department of marketing, strategy and international business at Hull University Business School (EQUIS, AMBA & AACSB triple accredited) in 2009. My work at Hull related to creativity and industrial development. During this period, I worked on the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) HQ seconded missions to Bhutan, Egypt, Pakistan and China and gained field experience advising government. The field research, later published by UNIDO in a position paper, extended to entrepreneurship, creative industries and industrial development strategy and competitiveness. I moved to the field of professional finance and worked for private equity as head of operations until 2015 after MBA with Chicago Booth, then headed up a finance and energy department at Coventry University London, before moving back to Coventry main campus as principal lecturer in finance. I joined UCL in 2018 as visiting professor and then took up MSc Infrastructure Investment and Finance programme directorship between 2019 and 2021 and was deputy departmental tutor between 2022 and 2023.  

Research Summary

I am an associate professor in infrastructure economics and finance at the Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction (BSSC). My research is multi-disciplinary and covers areas related to diverse infrastructure sectors and the environment. I am also a research associate with UCL's Infrastructure Systems Institute at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics EngineeringInternationally, I am affiliated with Xiamen University and holds a current university chair professorship in finance (PT), and as an invited expert, with Shanghai Jiaotong University's centre for housing and rural urban development. 

I have published with Energy Economics (Impact Factor 9.252), Industrial Marketing Management (IF 8.89), Land Use Policy (IF 6.189), Journal of Cleaner Production (IF 11.072), Journal of Management in Engineering (IF 6.85), Structural Change and Economics Dynamics (IF 5.059), Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence, Clean Technologies and Environmental Policy, and Competition and Change. I serve as research topic editors to Frontiers in Earth Science, Journal of Chinese Economic and Business Studies and Frontiers in Built Environment, and reviewed, in addition to the journal above, for Regional Studies and International Review for Applied Economics, Financial Innovation and Expert Systems with Applications. I am a member of the Royal Economic Society, European Finance Association, and various learned society in the past. 

I welcome PhD students who is passionate about using a data driven approach to address important research questions confronting the human dilemma, and those who can make original contribution to knowledge.  

Teaching Summary

I lead and teach two modules at UCL: Risk Modelling and Asset Management for Infrastructure Project (BCPM0021) and Infrastructure Using Special Purpose Vehicle (BCPM0017)My early teaching are mostly economics until 2009. Since then, I have taught global financial market, financial modelling, international investment analysis, international business and strategy for Executive MBA and professional MSc (CFA & FRM academic partners) in Bahrain, China, Oman, Singapore and the UK. Internationally, I hold an university chair professorship in finance (PT) with Xiamen University and lecture on transnational M&A valuation, where I was a visiting professor to the school of economics (2007-2008) teaching industrial economics. Between 2009 and 2010, I was senior visiting professor to the cultural industries institute of Peking University teaching EDP course.
