Biography

My career spans over two decades as an academic, consultant and finance professional. I started my early career with legal service in China in 1990’s. My work involved translating international contracts related to joint venture, commercial documents such as letter of credit, and technical document such as patent. The full complexity of legal work opened the door for me to see a whole new world of international business outside China, and my own limitation. I decided to come to the UK to study business followed by a master degree in international law.

Following my master with Newcastle, I received a PhD Studentship with the Business School of University of Hertfordshire. My PhD studentship, supervised by Professor Jane Hardy, looked at Foreign Direct Investment, and I was affiliated with the Centre for Institutional Economics led by Professor Geoffrey Hodgson. My first academic job was with Oxford Brookes University as a fixed term lecturer in economics. In 2005, I moved back to Hertfordshire and stayed there as Senior Lecturer in Economics and MSc Programme Leader until 2009, then I joined Hull University Business School.

My research in Hull focuses on creativity and industrial development. During this period, I have worked on seconded missions for UNIDO to Bhutan, Egypt, Pakistan and China and gained experiences in the field in the Gulf and Singapore. The co-authored research published by UNIDO in 2013 was based on invited keynotes at the European Parliament and European Forum Alpbach. I published papers on creative industries, industrial development strategy and international competitiveness.

Following my Chicago Booth MBA, I moved to the field of finance and worked for private equity firm in operation role, involved in setting up fund. Subsequently I gained professional qualification through exam as licensed fund management and securities trading professional. From these professional backgrounds, I became interested in infrastructure investment and finance, and how infrastructure helps connect people, place and institutions, and from a comparative perspective, the impacts of infrastructure investment and finance on risk and the environment.

Research Summary
