Biography

Becky is Professor of Education and Director of the Centre for Education Improvement Science at the UCL Institute of Education. Between 2014 and 2017 she took leave from her academic position to set up and run Education Datalab, a research organisation supported by the non-profit FFT Education Ltd. Prior to this she was a Reader in Economics of Education here at UCL Institute of Education. She is a former secondary school teacher.



Research Summary

Becky is an economist by training and almost all her research involves the use of very large administrative and survey datasets to study schooling. She has written extensively on how schools respond to changes in government policies and about the teacher labour market.


Past research includes studies of:

  • early career trajectories of teachers
  • efficacy of alternative initial teacher training routes
  • school admissions policies and parental choice of school
  • school accountability and governance
  • the role of faith schools in state education
  • competition between schools

Teaching Summary

In the past, Becky has been a masters course leader and tutor on various economics and quantitative methods courses.


She is happy to receive submissions from prospective PhD students who wish to use quantitative research methodologies to research schools.
