I studied Ecology at York University, completing a DPhil in Epidemiology and Ecology at Oxford University in 1991, and moved on to hold a Junior Research Fellowship at St Cross College, Oxford. From Oxford, I joined the British Trust for Ornithology, as the Head of the Census Unit, moving on to the RSPB in 1999, as the Head of the Monitoring. I am now a Professor of Conservation Science and Head of Monitoring Conservation Science within the RSPB Centre for Conservation Science (see richardgregory), and a member of the RSPB’s Science Leadership Team. I was made an Honorary Professor at UCL in 2016 and I currently work one or two days a week in the Centre for Biodiversity and Environment Research (CBER) at UCL, the rest of the time at RSPB. I am a Member of the CBER Management Team.
Involved in a range of research collaborations with academics, NGOs and government agencies, engaging with nature practice and policy related to national governments, EU, UN and CBD. I am for e.g. a member the IUCN/SSC Species Monitoring Specialist Group, the Biodiversity Indicator Partnership, UK Biodiversity Indicators Steering Group, and act on various expert panels. I have a good publication record (Google Scholar: profile).

Interests in conservation and biodiversity science - linking conservation science with practice and policy making. Research interests in biological survey design, biodiversity monitoring, metrics and indicators, climatic change indicators, citizen science, setting conservation priorities, measuring natural capital and ecosystem services, environmental indicators, understanding the impacts of land use and climate change on nature, and whether conservation works. Promoting evidence-based environmental decision making in a range of practical, academic, policy and political arenas in UK, Europe and globally: bridging the gap between conservation science, practice and policy making. A keen communicator of science to broad audiences, from politicians to the general public.
My team at the RSPB leads work on bird species' monitoring and biodiversity indicators research, often working with partners in Europe and globally, to promote biodiversity science and conservation objectives. My team, for example, leads on the production of the State of Nature report in UK, with many partners, and we help supervise the Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme (https://pecbms.info/). My team also provides scientific support for site protection and conservation in the UK. The latter includes the science required to support policy and individual casework in relation to growing threats posed to important sites for wildlife, including Protected Areas.
University teaching experience with undergraduates and graduates at Oxford and University College London (UCL), including supervision & examination of Masters and PhDs in UK and Europe. I currently co-supervise two PhD students at UCL and one at the University of East Anglia. I have co-supervised two PhDs to completion (Dr Simon Mills: Impacts of extreme climatic events on European bird and butterfly populations & Dr Charlotte Outhwaite: Biodiversity status, drivers and indicators from biological records).
Work at CBER involves supervising PhD and Masters students, teaching on BIOL0032 Species Conservation & Biodiversity and BIOS0021 Science Communication for Biologists modules, occasional departmental lectures, supporting the management team, and I act as a RSPB representative on the London NERC DTP.
