Sunny is a scientist, journalist, editor, expert in technical communication, and author of Explaining the Future: How to Research, Analyze, and Report on Emerging Technologies (Oxford University Press, 2019). Having taught previously at UC Berkeley (1999) and Imperial College London (2001-2013) she currently teaches at UCL, where she has developed a programme to teach technical argument, writing, presentation, and professional skills to undergraduates and postgraduates across the Engineering and Science faculties, as well as specialist modules in technical journalism. She is the founder and Editorial Director of Engineering Inspiration (ENGins), and the founder of Form & Content Media: a company that specializes in creating and curating readable content about science and technology for institutional clients.
Sunny has served on:
- The Executive Board of the Association of British Science Writers (split terms from 2009 to 2019)
- The Governance Committee of the National Association of Science Writers (US) 2017-2019
- The Board of the World Federation of Science Journalists (2019-2022)

Sunny is currently researching a book on neuromorphic engineering, in collaboration with Professor Ralph Etienne-Cummings of Johns Hopkins University. Her other research interests stem from her teaching in the areas of research, analysis, and communication in emerging technologies. Sunny was a 2016 recipient of the Provost's teaching award and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her teaching is focussed in two main areas:
