Research Summary

I am an academic trainee in respiratory medicine, and am interested in translational aspects of respiratory infection and tuberculosis (TB) research - both in the UK and globally. I have previously led research projects based at Desmond Tutu HIV Centre, Cape Town (under the supervision of the late Prof Stephen Lawn), and at Public Health England as part of the ‘UK TB-HIV Research, Epidemiology & Development’ (UK-THREAD) group, using national level HIV and TB data.

I am now an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow at UCL Institute for Global Health. In my PhD, I aim to develop new tools to refine the risk stratification of individuals with latent TB infection for progression to TB disease, using a combination of epidemiological and 'omics approaches. This work has 3 components:

1) Evaluation of the prognostic value of existing biomarkers (tuberculin skin test and interferon gamma release assays) for predicting incident TB, including assessment of alternative test cut-offs, and newer generation assays;

2) Individual participant data meta-analysis (including >80,000 participants from 18 cohort studies) to derive a personalised risk prediction model for incident TB (PERISKOPE-TB);

3) Systematic head-to-head evaluations of candidate host transcriptional biomarkers for incipient TB, and triage/diagnosis for active TB.

My PhD is jointly supervised by Prof Ibrahim Abubakar, Prof Mahdad Noursadeghi and Prof Marc Lipman at UCL.

In parallel to this work, I am a senior mentor for the WHO European Tuberculosis Research Initiative (ERI-TB) and also teach on the UCL Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology MSc (Molecular Epidemiology module).
