Biography

I am a Senior Research Fellow at UCL Social Research Institute since 2018, conducting social research on neonatal and paediatric healthcare. I was awarded a PhD in Sociology by UCL, Institute of Education in 2016 for a “Critical realist study of neonatal intensive care in Mexico”. Prior to my career in academia, I worked in special educational needs, designing and delivering child-led intervention programmes and advising mainstream pre-school and primary schools in Mexico.

Research Summary

My work with babies, children, and families in the UK and Mexico is located at the intersection of sociology of childhood, sociology of health and illness and children’s rights. Using a range of qualitative methos, including ethnography, my work explores children’s experiences within healthcare institutions. I am particularly interested in shared decision-making in paediatric care, and nurturing care of critically ill babies in neonatal care. I also conduct systematic reviews employing qualitative and participatory research methodologies. My aim is to produce policy-relevant research to inform paediatric and neonatal healthcare. My work is underpinned by a critical realist perspective.

My research interests include sociology of childhood; children's rights in relation to healthcare; children's palliative care; and research ethics. I have a particular interest in shared decision-making in neonatal and paediatric healthcare and in applied critical realism. I welcome PhD students wishing to explore these areas.

Teaching Summary

I co-lead a module called Researching Childhoods (which focuses on doing research with children) and lead the Dissertation Module in the MA Sociology of Childhood and Children’s Rights. I supervise postgraduate students on the same programme and on the MSc Social Policyand Social Research.
