Biography

Rokia is Vice Dean for Innovation and Enterprise at the Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment at University College London and an Associate Professor in Building Performance Simulation at the UCL Institute for Environmental Designand Engineering (UCL IEDE). She trained as an architect specialising in environmental and energyefficient building design and completed a PhD degree at the Bartlett School ofGraduate Studies, UCL that examined the applicability of building energy simulation in the context of legislative compliance. 

As a member of the multi-disciplinary Complex Built Environment Group (CBES), her research interests include the computational modelling,analysis and monitoring of the energy performance of the domestic and commercialbuilding stock, development of building analysis models, delivery of retrofit strategies and theapplication of energy policy and legislation in the built environment.

Rokia has several years experience in academia,through her work both as a Research Associate at UCL Energy Institute and an assistant lecturer at  Alexandria University inEgypt. She has also been extensively involved  in UK sustainable designconsultancy, contributing to a number of international projects and  master plans for leading architectural firms such as Foster + Partners , KPF and MAKE .

In addition to previous memberships on the DECC Green Deal (Task 2)Advisory Group, the UKGBC Zero Carbon Non-Domestic Task Group and the UK (alternative) member on theExecutive Committee of the International Energy Agency Energy in Buildings and Communities(IEA EBC) Programme, she is currently a board member of the CIBSEBuilding Energy Simulation Group and Future Homes Group and Co-secretary of  IBPSA-England.

Research Summary

Rokia's  has worked on and directed research for the Climate Change Committee (CCC), the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the Energy Technologies Institute, Institute for Sustainability, the Greater London Authority, the Oman Electricity Authority, the British Council and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

Recent projects include analysis to refine domestic fabric energy efficiency assumptions for the Sixth Carbon Budget, understanidng the climate resilience of Micro, Small and Medium Industrial Workplaces in Egypt, preliminary analysis of the direct emissions from Hard to Decarbonise homes, assessing the Energiesprong retrofit scheme and best practice in deploying solid-wall insulation in UK homes.This work has included the development of new technologies and design solutionsfor energy efficient buildings and their practical application throughinnovative construction practices.

Teaching Summary

As part of her role as an Associate Professor in Building Performance Simulation at UCL IEDE, Rokia is the module leader on  the Low Energy Housing Retrofit modules and previous lead on the Methods of Environmental Analysis  and Advanced BuildingSimulation modules for the EnvironmentalDesign and Engineering MSc. Degree course. She has also taught on theEnvironmental Systems Engineering MSc. course run by the Department of Civil,Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE) at UCL and the Low CarbonBuilding Design and Modelling MSc. at Loughborough University.

In addition to her teaching activities, Rokiasupervises a number of students at postgraduate level across the BartlettFaculty of the Built Environment. This includes the EDE MSc. course, MRes program at the Centre forDoctoral Training (CDT) in Energy Demand Reduction as well the MArch program the BartlettSchool of Architecture. At doctoral level, she supervises several PhDstudents across UCL at UCL IEDE (where she was the Institute PhD Lead), UCL Energy Institute in addition to EngD. students on the VEIV program. She has also supervised at postgraduate level at the ÉcoleNationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris (Mines ParisTech) and is an external supervisor at doctoral level at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid ((UPM) , Beirut Arab University (BAU) and the Technical University of Dublin (TUD).

Prior to joining UCL, she taught for a numberof years at Alexandria University, the Arab Academy for Science and Technology (AAST) and was recently a VisitingProfessor at Beirut Arab University.
