Biography

Iwas born in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1980. After studying Medicine atthe University of Coimbra (founded in 1290), I started my specialisation inCardiology in 2006. My general Cardiology training was at CHU Coimbra and CH LisboaOcidental-Santa Cruz. In late 2012, I moved to Toulouse, France for a CardiacElectrophysiology Fellowship at Clinique Pasteur. I continued mytraining in Cardiac Electrophysiology in London from 2014 onwards at The HeartHospital - UCL Hospitals, and later at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, until I wasappointed Consultant in the Summer of 2017. Iam currently an Associate Professor at the Institute of Health Informatics University College of London and a Cardiology/Cardiac Electrophysiology Consultant at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. I run a weekly Arrhythmia clinic at Newham University Hospital, and regularly perform catheter ablation procedures of all types of arrhythmias (atrial fibrillation, supraventricular arrhythmias, ventricular arrhythmias, etc.), and implant cardiac pacemakers, implantable cardiac defibrillators and cardiac resynchronisation therapy devices.

Research Summary

My involvement in Research started simultaneously with myCardiology training, and I have combined both activities uninterruptedly eversince. After an initial period performing basic science, I chose to focus onclinical science, and later epidemiology and genetics. I have authored over 200publications in the field of cardiology and arrhythmias, some of which havebeen included in international guidelines - British, European and American -for the management of cardiovascular disease. My main research interests areatrial fibrillation, sudden cardiac death, catheter ablationtechniques/approaches, clinical epidemiology and genetics. In 2015, I wasawarded with the Young Investigator Award in Clinical Science at the EuropeanHeart Rhythm Association Congress, in Milan. The investigation was on thereproducibly of cryoballoon ablation vs. radio frequency ablation for thetreatment of atrial fibrillation in a multicentre French survey. Those weredata from the early days of this technique which has now become mainstream andhas gained worldwide usage. In 2016 I started working with Professor JP Casasat the Institute of Health Informatics with the aim of creating a groupspecialising on the epidemiology of arrhythmic disorders. I am currentlystudying the natural history of AF in the UK in a database of 6.7 millionpatients, and identifying the different AF sub-phenotypes based on the conceptof clinical trajectories. One of my recent interests is the identification of novel drug targets for atrial fibrillation. I have been the Coordinating Editor of Cochrane's Heart Group since 2018 and have an interest in evidence synthesis - I am currently collaborating in the preparation of 7 systematic reviews for the new Guideline in the treatment and prevention of acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease.

Teaching Summary

I regularly teach Cardiology trainees from the London Deanery - at the Royal Society of Medicine.

I have also lectured on Evidence Synthesis for Masters students from the Institute of Health Informatics - UCL, and have supervised 4 Masters' dissertations of students of the Health Informatics & Health Data Science Masters degrees. I am currently supervising 3 Masters' students and 2 PhD students.

Prior to my move to the UK I was involved in teaching of Medical school and Physiology pre and post-graduates. I was invited Lecturer of the Cardiology module at Coimbra’s MedicalSchool, University of Coimbra, from 2011 to 2014. I Supervised or Co-supervised 12 Master of Science theses in Portugal (at the University of Coimbra - Faculty of Medicine; and the Schoolof Health Technology of Coimbra, Portugal).
