Research Summary

I am a psychologist with over 15 years' academic and clinical experience studying substance addictions and harm reduction. My research has a particular focus on tobacco dependence treatment within communities facing severe and multiple disadvantage. I am interested in addressing how social determinants influence uptake and use of mainstream smoking cessation treatments and act as wider barriers to tobacco harm reduction.

I co-lead a programme of work on smoking and homelessness, including co-leading the first cluster randomised controlled trial measuring the effectiveness of e-cigarettes versus usual care for smoking cessation in this population. I also lead the development of an ontology for use by nicotine and tobacco researchers. My research is funded by Cancer Research UK, the Medical Research Council and the National Institute of Health Research.

Teaching Summary

I offer dissertation supervision to students studying on the MSc in Health Psychology.
