I completed my PhD at UCL Institute of Education, 1996-2000. I have also worked at the University of Brighton, University of Sussex, the Open University, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
I have qualitative research methodology expertise and have researched and written in the areas of child and youth cultures; gender, and 'sexualisation' debates; pedagogies, including the role of media in relationships, sexuality and health education; young people as media audiences; student and youth “voice”, citizenship and participation; creative research methods. I am the co-editor of the journal Children and Society.
I was a co-investigator on a Methodological Innovation project which became Researching Everyday Childhoods: Time, Technology and Documentation in a Digital Age (Rachel
Thomson, Liam Berriman, Sara Bragg 2018. London: Bloomsbury). I was also co-investigator with
Emma Renold, Jessica Ringrose and Carolyn Jackson on Young People’s Experiences of Gender
for the Office of the Children’s Commissioner England. Recently I have
worked with Chris Bonell, Ruth Ponsford and the Sex Education Forum on Positive Choices,
a whole-school Relationships and Sex Education programme.
In 2020 I was an advisor on DfE materials to support the implementation of
statutory RSE, worked with Brook / CEOP on Digital Romance 2.0 on
LGBTQ+ online relationships (led by Rachel Thomson at University of
Sussex), helped draft a position paper on Gender and education for the
Women's
Budget Group with Tiffany Page (IOE) and Vanita Sundaram (York) and was
a consultant on a Wellspring report on child and youth participation. I have also worked as an advisor to Stonewall on their gender equity training, and
to South West Grid for Learning developing RSE materials on pornography
for parents, schools and students. I convened an ESRC seminar series
New Practices for New Publics (2015-18) on theories of social practice
and civil society.
I am a lecturer in Sociology of Education in the Department of Education, Practice and Society, and a member of the UCL Centre for Sociology of Education and Equity. I am also Programme Lead for the MA Social Justice and Education.
I co-lead the MA Sociology Cluster module Understanding Education Research with Olga Cara.
I am module leader for the Level 6 Gender, Sexuality and Feminisms in Everyday Lives on the BA Education Studies.
in 2019-20 I worked
with Jessica Ringrose, Sarah Worton and colleagues at the IoE on a Knowledge
Exchange and Innovation Fund project developing an RSE module for PGCE students.
