Biography

I have research experience across the Neuroscience field. This commenced during my undergraduate studies where I spent a year working at Novartis in Basel, Switzerland working in the muscular dystrophy field using molecular, biochemical and cell culture techniques. I gained a BSc in Biological Sciences with an intercalated year from University of Warwick (2009). I then completed my PhD at Warwick University funded by BBSRC/Case Studentship with GlaxoSmith Kline (GSK) in 2013. The research involved understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying learning and memory in a transgenic mouse model. This entailed preparing primary postnatal hippocampal, western blotting, transfections, confocal microscopy, immunocytochemistry as well as electrophysiology. In the final year of my PhD I was nominated as the primary researcher on a BBSRC-FAPESP grant in collaboration with Dr. da Silva at the University of São Paulo. This allowed me to visit Dr. da Silva's lab for a month in order to establish a technique which I had designed and optimised at the University of Warwick. During my PhD I was awarded a transferable skills certificate.Following my doctorate, I joined Queen Square Brain Bank in London where I have the privilege to work with post-mortem tissue. The first project involved looking at mitochondrial dysfunction in the neurodegenerative disease, multiple system atrophy (MSA) funded by MSA trust and is currently ready to be submitted for publication. I was then asked to work on two projects part time, one was funded by the Kind Baudouin Foundation focusing on DNA methylation in MSA using bisulphite conversions and 850K (EPIC) arrays and now working with an bioinformatician in order to understand the data. The other project is Dr Lashley’s Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) senior fellowship. This research focuses on trying to understand the mechanisms behind different neurodegenerative diseases, especially frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Following this work I have found a passion in FTD research and have recently submitted my own junior fellowship to ARUK and Alzheimer’s Society.

Teaching Summary

I have gained experience in teaching through multiple channels. I am on the committee for the MSc in dementia. I have supervised and supported Master’s students literature projects, trained technicians in the laboratory and designed and supervised a research project for a Master’s student. For the last two academic years I have run a journal club seminar for MSc students. I have always enjoyed teaching and guiding new students and colleagues. This has lead me to start putting together an application for the UCL Arena teaching fellowship. I have gained enough experience to reflect and present detailed case studies and discussions on my teaching methods.
